Hawks close out regular season Saturday night

Published: September 1, 2012

ONE FINAL VICTORY?

Boise will try to finish the regular season on a winning note as it hosts the Everett AquaSox in the fifth and final game of a five-game series.

The Hawks clinched a playoff spot a week ago, so they’re playing for momentum — and some individual recognition.

• Utility man Stephen Bruno leads the Northwest League with a .359 batting average.

• Second baseman Gioskar Amaya is tops in triples with 11. Amaya (58) and Bruno (51) are first and second in runs scored.

• Rock Shoulders and Dan Vogelbach lead the team with 10 homers, two away from the league leaders.

HAWKS LOSE FRIDAY NIGHT

The Everett AquaSox defeated Boise 6-4 in front of 2,436 fans at Memorial Stadium.

Boise jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Hayden Simpson (2-4), a 2010 first-round pick, was roughed up for six earned runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Hawks answered with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t complete the rally.

Stephen Bruno went 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 21 games.

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Starter Felix Pena threw five shutout innings, striking out three and walking one.

CUBS’ DEADLINE IS SATURDAY

The Chicago Cubs’ player development contract with the Hawks expires Saturday, but there is a two-week window for the two teams to finalize negotiations.

The Cubs have made it clear they are not happy with the aging Memorial Stadium and its facilities, and want to see progress on improvements or plans for a new stadium.

Jason McLeod, the Cubs’ senior vice president of scouting and player development, has been in Boise this week and he and Hawks President Todd Rahr have had ongoing discussions. Rahr said those talks have been productive and he is hopeful the two sides can come to an agreement.
