Boise Open briefly snubs Vandals

Published: September 1, 2012

Look Ma, no Vandals? The Boise Open’s $50,000 Michelob Ultra Shoot-Out on Sept. 10 will benefit the Boise State and University of Idaho golf teams as usual. But it also features the University of Oregon, and this year the Vandals were an afterthought.

Vandals push back: Last week, organizers announced a matchup that was strictly Broncos and Ducks. That didn’t set well with some Vandal fans at Hillcrest Country Club, where the tournament will be held for its 23rd year. “We had some people in Boise that asked the question,” said tournament organizer Jeff Sanders, an all-American at Oregon and former PGA Tour player.

The answer? Sanders said the idea was to play off the Bronco-Duck football rivalry. But two days after the initial announcement, he agreed to add the Vandals, who get long-drive champ Jamie Sadlowski on their team. Since 1990, the event has raised $136,500 for Bronco golf and $110,00 for the Vandals.

Hopes for a bigger crowd: “The last thing we would do is snub anybody,” Sanders said. “We’re excited about having three schools. We’ve got multiple rivalries going on. It should be real fun.”
