Phillips: Kelly’s in Cascade to host fishing derby

Published: August 30, 2012

This reinforces that whitewater parks are more than a place for kayakers to play.

Kelly’s Whitewater Park will have a fishing derby this weekend on the North Fork of the Payette River in Cascade. You can get full details at kellyswhitewaterpark.com, but here are the basics. Entry fee is $10 for adults and free for kids 17 and under. Cash and prizes go to the heaviest trout caught during the derby, and registration is required in advance at Tackle Tom’s on Main Street in Cascade. It sounds like a fun event, and if you’re in the area this weekend, stop by and wet a line. If you haven’t seen the park, you definitely should stop in. It’s a great place to visit even if you don’t fish or kayak.

And since we’re on the subject of the North Fork, it’s often an overlooked place to fish. Access is easy between the bridges in Cascade, but access can be tricky elsewhere.

Now’s a good time to search for some of those overlooked places as summer winds down.
