Officers were called to the 100 block of S. Marjorie Ave. in Middleton Friday just after 8:15 p.m. after a report of an accidental shooting.
Deputies from the Canyon County Sheriffs Office, the Canyon County Paramedics and Middleton Fire Department arrived and found a man performing first aid on a woman who was shot in the head.
Witnesses told officers that the 56-year-old man who owns the home was showing an unloaded 380 caliber handgun to his nephew. After the nephew handed back the gun, the man reloaded it. He was trying to get the gun's hammer to go down when the gun discharged. The bullet struck the man's 51-year-old wife who was standing nearby.
Other family members called 911 for help.
The condition of the 51-year-old woman is not known. Officers are still investigating the shooting. A press release from the Canyon County Sheriff's Office said it's too early to know if criminal charges will be filled.
Sheriff Chris Smith is reminding citizens to handle firearms safely and to always know where a gun is pointed.
