Should Greenbelt in Garden City be open to bicyclists? Voters will decide in November

Published: August 13, 2012

Garden City residents will get to decide if they want their city to open up a roughly 1.5-mile section of the Greenbelt north of the Boise River to bicyclists.

Members of Citizens for an Open Greenbelt, who want to see a continuous Greenbelt for bicyclists traveling between Boise and Eagle, presented petitions proposing changes to the city in July. The city council had three options, including enacting changes through new ordinances, putting them on the November ballot or letting the clerk place them on the ballot in 30 days.

On Monday, the council chose to let the clerk place the initiatives on the ballot, said Mayor John Evans. He said about 40 people turned out to the council meeting.

Voters will be asked to consider two initiatives — one to repeal the restriction on bicyclists, and the other to permit all forms of non-motorized transportation on the Greenbelt in Garden City.

Citizens for an Open Greenbelt was formed in 2007. Learn more about the group.
