U.S. Army Spc. Ethan J. Martin, 22, of Lewiston and Bonners Ferry had been assigned to 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
Martins family declined interview requests but issued a statement saying Martin had planned to attend nursing school after the Army.
Ethan was a very loving young man with a tender heart, the family said. He loved Idaho and he loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his mother, father, sister, four stepsisters and three stepbrothers.
Martin is at least the 66th Idahoan, including several civilians, to die in U.S. military action since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
