Garden City gets money for Greenbelt bridge

Published: August 9, 2012

How much? Garden City received a $727,760 Federal Highway Administration grant to design and construct the Garden City West Bridge — a bicycle and pedestrian span that will cross the Boise River and connect bike paths between Glenwood Street and Eagle Road. The grant is enough to pay for the entire project.

When will the bridge be built? Mayor John Evans said its design and other details are still being finalized, but the bridge should be in place by next summer.

Why is the bridge so important? It will help connect an existing stretch of the Eagle Greenbelt on the river’s north side to a path on the river’s south side between Eagle Road and Glenwood. The new link would provide a much-needed alternative to a path that is closed to bicycles on the river’s north side just west of Glenwood. This forces cyclists looking for a continuous Greenbelt ride to take a nearly 2.5-mile detour through the Riverside Village subdivision to reconnect.
