Idaho Olympics roundup: Symmonds runs for 800 medal Thursday

Published: August 8, 2012

Boise native and 2002 Bishop Kelly graduate Nick Symmonds qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run Tuesday at the London Games.

Barely.

The 28-year-old Symmonds finished third in his semifinal heat behind Kenya’s David Rudisha and Great Britain’s Andrew Osagie — only the top two automatically qualified — and had to wait to see if he advanced on time. He did. His time of 1 minute, 44.87 seconds was just good enough. Symmonds was seventh among eight qualifiers.

“Not exactly how I imagined making an Olympic Final but I’ll take it!” Symmonds tweeted from @NickSymmonds.

The eight-man final is at 1 p.m. Mountain.

• Kurt Felix (Boise State), decathlon, will end his competition around 2:30 p.m. MDT Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday’s schedule includes the 100m at 3:10 a.m., long jump at 4:10 a.m., shot put at 6:10 a.m., high jump at 11 a.m., and 400m at 2:30 p.m.

• Georgia Gould (formerly of Ketchum), women’s mountain biking, 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
