No thanks: Florida job doesn’t interest Luna

Published: August 4, 2012

Looking for an education leader: Florida is looking for a new education commissioner. The American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, is floating a couple of names, including Tom Luna, Idaho’s superintendent of public instruction.

It’s not the first time. Luna told the Idaho Statesman on Friday that he received a call more than a year ago from Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s chief of staff and from an organization scouting possibilities. “I was honored,” Luna said. “I told them no.” The latest commissioner, Gerard Robinson, resigned Tuesday.

Same answer. Luna’s name resurfaced this week when the enterprise institute’s education-policy director mentioned him in a Tampa Bay Times story. Luna didn’t know about that until the Statesman called him Friday. He said his answer is the same. “I love Idaho, and the work we are doing here is the most exciting in the country,” Luna said. “I’m happy where I am, and I’m staying here.”
