Idaho Youth Ranch to open Boise store on Broadway Aug. 4

Published: August 3, 2012

A new Idaho Youth Ranch thrift store will open its doors 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at 2141 Broadway Ave., the former home of Boise Bargain Basket.

Jeff Myers, vice president of business enterprise for the nonprofit, said the store will have seven full-time employees.

Because of its proximity to Boise State University, the store will be stocked with clothes and furniture that typically appeal to college students who shop at Idaho Youth Ranch stores.

The location will be the 11th in the Treasure Valley.

Idaho Youth Ranch has plans to continue expanding. Myers said the stores have seen a steady increase in sales, after the worst of the economic downturn prompted shoppers to become more frugal.

"We are continuing to look for some additional locations in the Treasure Valley," he said. "[We] expect to open one to two additional stores this fiscal year."

The store on Five Mile and Overland will be moved to a larger location, across the street into the complex anchored by an Albertsons grocery store. A new holiday-themed Idaho Youth Ranch store — featuring Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holiday decorations and goods — will be opened in its place.

"Thrift shoppers have been consistently loyal to thrift stores, both for us and around the country, throughout the recession," Myers said.

Youth Ranch sales vary by store but are typically in line with the national growth rate of 7 percent a year, he said.
