Published: July 28, 2012

Luke Leonnig, 14, won the national title in the discus at the USA Track & Field National Outdoor Junior Olympics on Thursday in Baltimore.

Leonning, who will be a freshman at Eagle High, topped the field of 48 competitors with a personal-best throw of 178 feet, 1 inch. His winning toss was nearly 4 feet farther than second-place finisher Hunter Davis.

“I just wanted to get in there, throw well and do my best,” Leonning said. “I was hoping to get in the 170s.”
