KRISTIN ARMSTRONG

Idaho connection: Boise resident and a University of Idaho graduate

Age: 38

Events: Women’s cycling, road race and time trial

London schedule: Road race, July 29 (noon in London, 5 a.m. in Boise); time trial, Aug. 1 (12:30 p.m. in London, 5:30 a.m. in Boise)

Olympic history: Third appearance at the Summer Games — finished eighth in the road race at Athens (2002) and won gold in the time trial at Beijing (2008).

2012 medal chances: Armstrong is one of the best in the world in the time trial. She suffered a fractured clavicle in May at the Exergy Tour in Boise, but says she is fully recovered.

Quotable: “I don’t want to do anything less than gold. It’d be one thing if I got silver or bronze the last time around. One more higher medal would be good. But it’s hard going in as defending champion and thinking you want anything less than a win.” — Armstrong

Did you know? Armstrong retired after the 2009 season to focus on having a family. Son, Lucas, was born in 2010.

Olympic history: Second appearance at the Summer Games — made the semifinals, but did not qualify for the final in the 2008 Beijing Games.

KURT FELIX

Idaho connection: Competed for the Boise State track and field team from 2009 to 2012

Age: 24

Event: Decathlon

London schedule: Decathlon, Aug. 8-9 (events from 10:10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in London on Aug. 8, 3:10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Boise; events from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. in London on Aug. 9, 2 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Boise)

Olympic history: First appearance.

2012 medal chances: Felix’s NCAA championship point total would have ranked third at the U.S. Olympic Trials, but isn’t enough to make him a medal favorite in London. Four years from now, he could be one of the world’s best.

Quotable: “I don’t have any pressure on me to perform like most of the big guys. Hopefully, I’ll come home with a personal best.” — Felix

Olympic history: He failed to reach the finals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. In 2008, he was considered a strong medal contender but didn’t make the U.S. team.

2012 medal chances: The U.S. hasn’t won a men’s discus medal since 1984, but Rome has shown world-class talent. He recorded the world’s third-longest throw last year and posted top-five throws in 2007 and 2005, too. He says he’s throwing better than ever.

Quotable: “I expect to get a medal. I’m in the best shape of my life right now. I’m throwing phenomenal. … In ’04, if I would have thrown what I had thrown at the trials, I would have gotten bronze, but I was inexperienced and I kind of (peed) down my leg in the competition. It was my first time throwing in front of 100,000 people. … This is my 20th year throwing and my 12th year throwing professionally. I feel more prepared than I ever have.” — Rome

Olympic history: First appearance.

2012 medal chances: Lyle is one of the youngest competitors in her sport, which is dominated by older and more experienced international riders. A medal would be an long shot.

Quotable: “I’m kind of used to being one of the youngest riders, and I think it’s great for drawing a whole new generation of people to the sport. Most of my friends are not horsey, which is fantastic because it helps you keep your perspective … and many of them come to watch me ride and think it’s cool.” — Lyle, to Dressage News
