Its July, which means its time to fish those clear, cool headwater streams. If I could take only one fly, this is the one I would take. It mimics a golden stonefly, small hopper, or it just looks buggy and fish like to eat it. It floats like a cork and takes repeated gnawings from trout teeth. I like a smaller version, about a size 14. Cutthroats, rainbows and brookies love it. Ive seen trout rise from green depths to take this fly, but my favorite way to fish it is drifting through riffles. Watching a cutthroat rise in a riffle and hit one is always the height of my summer fishing.
