Former Boise State track and field standout Jarred Rome earned a spot on the 2012 USA Olympic track and field team on Thursday evening, placing second in the discus throw at the Olympic Trials at the University of Oregons Hayward Field.
Rome, who competes for Nike, claimed the runner-up title with a toss of 207 feet, 10 inches. The 2000 Boise State graduate also competed in the 2004 Olympics in the discus. Rome faulted on each of his second through fourth throws, but he qualified for the Olympic team with his final throw.
Ian Waltz (Post Falls High) just missed making the Olympic team, finishing fourth with a throw of 201-2. Russ Winger (University of Idaho) took fifth, with a toss of 200-11.
Rome joins 2012 Boise State senior Kurt Felix as Bronco representatives at the 2012 Olympics in London. Felix will compete in the decathlon for his native country of Grenada.
