23-year-old Melba man killed Sunday afternoon on I-84 after wheel comes off vehicle; Boise woman treated for injuries

Driver Shaun Read was ejected from his 1987 Chevy pickup when the vehicle lost a wheel and rolled along Interstate 84 at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday, according to Idaho State Police. Read was not wearing a seat belt.

The 23-year-old from Melba was transported by air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, where he died from injuries in the crash.

A passenger in the vehicle, Crystal Steffler, 19, of Boise, was wearing a seat belt and was transported by ground ambulance to St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario, Ore., where she was treated for minor injuries.

The rollover occurred in the eastbound lanes on Interstate 84 near milepost 13, west of the Black Canyon Exit. The roads were blocked for about 2.5 hours while crews worked to clear the scene.

The crash is under investigation by Idaho State Police.
