Makin’ tracks: biking, Redfish Lake, backcountry horseback rides, paleontology camps

Fifth annual Jug Mountain Ranch Cross Country and Super D mountain bike races are Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24, near McCall.

The race is a qualifier for the Cross Country National Championships held in Sun Valley next month (see page 3 for details). But the Jughandle race is for all ages and abilities on singletrack and doubletrack starting at Jug Mountain Ranch east of Lake Fork.

There will also be a trail running race on Saturday after the cross country race.

The Super D race will be on Sunday, riders will compete on a downhill course that’s over 2 miles long and features jumps, drops and berms. You can register at spondoro.com.

The Redfish Center at Redfish Lake, south of Stanley, and the Stanley Museum are now open.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sept. 16.

The Redfish Center offers an art gallery, exhibits, displays and video programs as well as evening campfire programs, guided nature walks, Redfish Lake boat tours, discovery stations and Junior Ranger programs.

The Stanley Museum, located between Stanley and Lower Stanley, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special programs are also conducted for kids. For details go to DiscoverSawtooth.org.

Boise Back Country Horsemen’s Saddle Up for St. Jude trail ride is Saturday, June 23, in Idaho City. Registration is from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Idaho City Rodeo Grounds. Poker rides will be 5- or 10-mile trail rides, and the event also includes a raffle and auction to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Registration is being taken for July paleontology camps for kids at the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument in Hagerman.

The camp includes hands-on activities for kids with an emphasis on education.

Camp for ages 8-10 will be July 18-20 and for ages 11-13, July 25-27.
