A 27-year-old man is in custody Tuesday night, after police say he tried to steal items from at the WinCo on Caldwell Boulevard in Nampa and then went on a violent carjacking spree in an attempt to flee the scene.
Marty Glass, who lives in Nampa, was booked into the Canyon County Jail on petit theft, two counts of strong-arm robbery, two counts of assault and two counts of battery.
Police were called to the WinCo at 2:42 p.m. for numerous reports of carjacking in the parking lot.
Witnesses said a man later identified as Glass had tried to steal items from the store, then became violent when he was stopped by store employees. The man reportedly hit one employee in the head, and the other in the throat.
The suspect jumped into an unlocked vehicle and tried to flee, but was unable to get it started. He ran to another vehicle and try to pull the driver out. When the driver resisted, the man bit him on the hand. The man stole a pickup and tried to drive away, hitting a person who was blocking his path and ramming into a vehicle the victim, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The suspect abandoned the vehicle after it high centered on a curb near Jack in the Box. He ran into traffic on Caldwell Boulevard and tried unsuccessfully to get into two vehicles, then returned to the Jack in the Box and tried to get into a vehicle there. He then jumped through an open window of a vehicle at the drive-up.
The man was taken into custody by officers, with the assistance of citizens at the scene. Police believe he was under the influence of intoxicants. He was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, then booked into the Canyon County Jail.
With the exception of the one hit by the vehicle, all of the rampage victims were treated at the scene by paramedics.
