Nampa police say that when an officer tried to stop a vehicle driving recklessly Saturday night, the driver fled and then cut across grass in Kohlerlawn Cemetery.

Driver Timothy P. Darling stopped and gave up to police a few blocks away. He was charged with DUI, felony eluding the scene of a property damage accident and failure to purchase a driver's license.

The incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday. An officer tried to stop a Ford Escort without licenses plates traveling near 1st St. and 2nd Avenue North, and the vehicle nearly hit a police patrol vehicle head-on, police said. The officer was able to swerve out of the way.

The Escort fled the scene, continuing to 6th Street North, then through the cemetery. Police suspended the chase in the cemetery, but again spotted the vehicle in the area of Northside Boulevard and 6th Street North. They followed the vehicle to the 400 block of 1st Street North, where the driver stopped and gave up.

One of the charges against Darling was leaving the scene of a property accident because of the damage that was done to the lawn in the cemetery.
