The Boise Hawks dropped their first game of the season Friday night but they did what they could to make it interesting.
Boise forced extra innings with a run in the ninth before eventually losing 3-2 to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 12 innings.
The Hawks remain in Keizer, Ore., for four more nights before returning to Boise for their home opener at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday against the Eugene Emeralds.
Boise got a solid start from pitcher Jose Arias, who delivered five scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and struck out two.
Korean product Dong-Yub Kim delivered the first RBI of the season for Boise, which committed three errors, including one by shortstop Marco Hernandez that allowed the Volcanoes to score the winning run.
NOTE: Catcher Justin Marra has been promoted from extended spring training and joined Boise in time for its opener, the Hawks announced prior to the game.
Marra was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 15th round of the 2011 draft.
