Not only is REI the place outdoor gear junkies go to paw over ultralight backpacks, subzero sleeping bags and breathable ski jackets, it’s also where a salesman can spend 30 minutes describing every camp stove in stock if you let him.

It’s the knowledgeable staff and customer service that set REI apart from the competition, says Boise store manager Dean Meer.

If selection brings customers to REI, it’s the service that keeps them. Staffers become product experts by attending clinics throughout the year, and additional training teaches employees how best to identify customer needs, Meer said.

The Kent, Wash.-based retailer is also an active steward of Idaho land, working with nonprofits to protect recreation spots such as Harrison Hollow in the Boise Foothills, Meer said.

And then there’s that 10 percent annual dividend for REI members.

“It’s a great place to shop for your outdoor needs,” Meer said.
