If there is such a thing as a lock in the Best of Treasure Valley readers poll, it has to be Flying Pie taking the crown for the best pizza in town.

Flying Pie just keeps winning every year — and there’s been a lot of new competition lately, which Flying Pie bats away like a pizza version of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Artisan thin-crust pies? New-fangled “extreme” pizzas? Whatever. Flying Pie’s “whirled famous” pizza rolls over the competition like a massive foil ball named Flora.

Why is this?

Maybe it’s the consistency of being local before local was cool. (Flying Pie turned 34 this year.)

It could be the “It’s Your Day” specials — if your name goes up on the marquee and you are quick enough to sign up (sessions are 2 to 4 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m. and they’re first come, first served), you get to make your own 10-inch pie.

The most likely answer is you always get an excellent homegrown pie, whether it’s a simple pepperoni pizza or a complex melange of flavors like the Pesto Primavera.
