Boise State decathlete leads field after first day at NCAAs

Senior Kurt Felix has 4,187 points after five events at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Felix finished second in the 100 meters (10.90 seconds), first in the long jump (24 feet, 3.5 inches), 12th in the shot put (42-11), second in the high jump (6-8.75) and seventh in the 400 (48.77). Arkansas’ Gunnar Nixon (4,177 points) and Cornell’s Nick Huber (4,065) are among the 19 athletes chasing Felix, who has a history of strong first-day performances. The decathlon competition concludes Thursday with his favorite event (javelin), least favorite (pole vault) and the 110-meter hurdles, discus and 1,500.

• Idaho javelin thrower Mike Marshall will compete Thursday, while Boise State’s Emma Bates competes in the 10,000 meters Saturday.
