Arkansas Gunnar Nixon (4,177 points) and Cornells Nick Huber (4,065) are among the 19 athletes chasing Felix, who has a history of strong first-day performances. The decathlon competition concludes Thursday with his favorite event (javelin), least favorite (pole vault) and the 110-meter hurdles, discus and 1,500.
Idaho javelin thrower Mike Marshall will compete Thursday, while Boise States Emma Bates competes in the 10,000 meters Saturday.
