Idaho consumer group targets payday lenders with valentines

Members of the Idaho Community Action Network say they'll deliver Valentine's Day hearts on Tuesday to more than 30 payday lending stores in Idaho, including four in Boise.

The group is trying to get a bill through the Legislature that would place more restrictions on payday lending.

The group wants lawmakers to reduce the maximum payday loan amount from $1,000 to $300, to invalidate loans by unlicensed lenders, to require that lenders give consumers debt counseling, and to highlight risks associated with the typically high-interest loans.

ICAN says Idaho's laws do not limit interest rates on payday or title loans, and loans are limited at $1,000, which ICAN says is the highest of any limit in the U.S.

ICAN will deliver the valentines to stores in Boise, Nampa, Caldwell, Lewiston and Burley. ICAN says the Boise deliveries will be from about 1 to 3 p.m. at the following stores:

Æ Fast Bucks, 4116 W. Chinden Blvd.

Æ MoneyTree, 3159 W. State St.

Æ EZMoney, 2911 W. State St.

Æ EZMoney, 6942 W. State St.
