A bill that would increase truck speeds on Idaho interstates, which had been blocked in the Senate Transportation Committee, is coming back for more discussion Tuesday.
Sen. Chuck. Winder. R-Boise, who voted to hold the original bill in committee, said he wants more discussion after talking with state police officials who support allowing multi-axle trucks to travel at 75 miles an hour instead of the 65 mph limit they are required to follow now over most of the interstate highways. Cars can go 75 mph.
Supporters say eliminating the speed differential would make Idaho roads safer by cutting down on the number of cars passing slower moving trucks.
Winder said he only wants to have more discussion on the bill and isn't prepared to make any motions. He still opposes allowing trucks traveling at 75 mph. But he is looking to see what the impact might be of raising semis' speed limit to 70 mph.
Many trucks would not be affected by increasing the speed limit because companies keep trucks from going that fast to conserve fuel.
The committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in room WW53 in the Capitol.
