Jose de Jesus Rodriguez, 26, of Meridian, must spend at least 4 years in prison for his part in a failed murder-for-hire plot.

Rodriguez was sentenced Thursday by 3rd District Judge Bradley S. Ford to a 15-year prison sentence, with four years fixed, according to a release from Canyon County prosecutors.

Officials say it was a case of jealousy turned to murder-for-hire. According to court documents, Lorenzo A. Corral, 45, of Nampa, offered to pay Rodriguez $5,000 to shoot a man dating Corral's ex-girlfriend. Corral bought a shotgun and test-fired the weapon, documents say. Rodriguez's girlfriend exposed the plot to police, according to a probable cause affidavit. The plan involved Rodriguez shooting the man after his girlfriend lured the intended victim out of his residence with a vehicle repair ruse.

Rodriguez's girlfriend was arrested but ultimately not charged with felony conspiracy.

Rodriguez reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and will cooperate with the prosecution of Corral and others. Corral's trail is scheduled for April.

Officials said Rodriguez is currently being held outside of Canyon county for security purposes.
