New player’s day with the Steelheads: First game, first goal, first win

Idaho defenseman Matt Case welcomed his college roommate, Aaron Lewicki, to the Steelheads’ locker room Wednesday morning.

Later that night, Lewicki scored what ended up being the game-winning goal for the Steelheads in a 3-2 win over the Alaska Aces.

What a way to cap off a wild week. The 24-year-old forward played 38 games with Toledo’s ECHL team this season before being traded to Reading. After one game with Reading, he was traded to Idaho.

“I was in Toledo last week, then last weekend I was down in Florida with Reading, and now I’m in Boise. So I’ve seen most of the country in the last week,” Lewicki said. “I think a lot of pro hockey is finding the right fit, so hopefully this is the right fit for me.”

“He’s a good fit so far,” Case said. “It’s nice to be able to play again with someone you played with for four years in college (at Ferris State). He just works hard … and takes pucks to the net.”

Coach Hardy Sauter liked what he saw out of Lewicki.

“He was pretty solid,” Sauter said. “He was good in our zone. He’s smart. He’s a smart player, so he’s going to be able to fit in with what we’re trying to do here, for sure.”

Wednesday’s win was Idaho’s sixth in its past seven games against Alaska (32-16-5), the top team in the league.

If the season ended today, Idaho (22-20-5) would be the sixth seed in the Western Conference.

How does Sauter explain his team’s recent success against the defending Kelly Cup champions?

“I don’t even try to explain it,” he said. “I don’t care. We just know they’re a very good team, and if you’re not ready to play you’re in big trouble.”
