Adam R. Pehringer

Adam R. Pehringer is being held in the Ada County Jail on felony counts of grand theft and malicious injury to property and a DUI after Garden City police say he broke into an auto shop on Chinden Boulevard and stole a pickup early Wednesday before leading officers on a short pursuit.

A Garden City patrol officer began following Pehringer shortly after midnight after clocking a Nissan pickup going about 90 mph down Chinden Boulevard, headed east towards Boise.

Police say Pehringer attempted to a sudden turn on Orchard Street before hitting a median, which stopped the truck.

It was when police were talking with Pehringer they determined he was intoxicated and just recently stole the truck from Kid Gloves Body Works auto shop, which is located at 4605 Chinden Blvd.

Police say Pehringer vandalized several other vehicles at the shop and took items from inside those cars — which they found in the pickup truck. Police also say Pehringer drove the pickup through a locked gate at the auto shop to get out to the road.

Police officials said Wednesday they were still trying to figure out why Pehringer picked that auto shop to steal from. The pickup truck had the keys inside, according to reports.

Information about why police charged Pehringer with a DUI or what he was doing Wednesday night before police say he broke into the auto body shop was not available Wednesday morning.

The 25-year-old Pehringer will make his initial court appearance later Wednesday.

The crime of grand theft is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
