Supervalu Inc., the company that owns all Albertsons stores in Idaho, announced Tuesday it will cut its national workforce by 800 positions by the end of February.
About 130 of those jobs will be in Boise in the corporate offices and none in the stores, according to spokesman Mike Siemienas.
There are about 1,150 employees at the Supervalu offices in Boise, Siemienas said.
The layoffs will take place before the end of the fiscal year, which is Feb. 25, company officials said.
The layoffs include some positions that are open and have not been filled. Supervalu said the layoffs affect all company offices, but most store-level associates will not be affected. The Boise jobs include positions in technology, finance and other departments.
Officials at Supervalu, which bought the Albertsons chain in 2006, said the layoffs are part of the companys strategic plan to remove permanent expenses and reduce operating costs.
"We announced over a year ago our business transformation efforts," Siemienas said. "One of our goals -- especially with how competitive the grocery industry is -- is to operate as efficiently and effectively as we can. ... Having a leaner and flatter workforce is one of the ways to reduce expenses."
Siemienas said the layoffs were a way to reduce work duplication and inefficient processes.
