If you're looking for a little dog to add to your family, the Idaho Humane Society just took in a large number of Chihuahua mixes from an overwhelmed shelter in Porterville, Calif.
On Saturday, 67 dogs arrived at the Boise shelter, according to shelter officials. Eight of the dogs were transferred to the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, which will place them in homes in the Sun Valley area.
The first dozen dogs in Boise that are ready for adoption have been moved to the PetSmart Adoption Center at 130 N. Milwaukee St. They are waiting for new homes.
The Humane Society of the United States provided a veterinarian to the Porterville shelter so that all the dogs could be examined and vaccinated for rabies before they were brought to Idaho. A pet fashion company and a San Francisco Chihuahua owners group provided sweaters and other supplies for the short-haired dogs to wear in Idaho's colder climate.
More of the Chihuahuas will be available for adoption later this week, as their spay/neuter surgeries are done.
The Idaho Humane Society is at 4775 Dorman St. in Boise. Winter Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Sunday.
