The Bishop Kelly High girls had a few moments of relaxation after their final regular-season basketball game on Tuesday night.
The Knights earned the No. 2 seed and home-court advantage through the first two rounds of the 4A District Three Tournament with their 49-42 victory over Skyview.
Now comes the hard part.
Girls basketball teams throughout District Three will throw history out the window as they attempt to qualify for the state tournament, which runs Feb. 16-18.
The Knights (16-3, 13-3) completed a season sweep of the Hawks (15-5, 12-4), but the two teams could easily meet again in the 4A District Three semifinals with a state berth on the line.
Thats scary, Bishop Kelly coach Derek McCormick said.
Tuesdays game included nine lead changes and three ties. Skyview had a 42-40 lead with 1 minute, 14 seconds remaining in the game before BK recaptured the momentum.
Senior Abby Talboy who finished with a game-high 17 points hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to put the Knights ahead 43-42 with 59 seconds to go. Junior Kindall Murie added a fastbreak layup off an inbounds play and senior Mandy Carlson went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line in the final 20 seconds to give BK the win.
I think our 4A competition is very intense and anybody has a chance to win, Skyview coach Cindy Pasta said. All of our games lately have been extremely close and down to the wire.
The top two teams from the 4A District Three Tournament go to state and a third team can advance by winning a state play-in game against the District Four runner-up.
If we play like we did tonight in the future games, I think well have a good chance, BK senior Randi McReynolds said.
