Two of the Meridian districts five high schools, Rocky Mountain and Mountain View, are each about 15 percent over capacity. Both schools are projected to be more than 30 percent over capacity by the 2015-16 school year.
The other three high schools, Centennial, Eagle and Meridian, are 6 percent to 20 percent under capacity.
To balance enrollment and reduce overcrowding, district officials were considering changing the boundaries in fall 2014.
But the district this week decided to hold off on setting new boundaries because of parent concerns and the upcoming Meridian High renovation, said school spokesman Eric Exline.
We will continue to track what enrollment is doing with all five of our high schools, Exline said. Between now and 2015, we will need to come back and put in place a plan based on enrollment distribution.
The district also wants to renovate Meridian High before making any boundary adjustments. It has money in its facilities budget for the planned renovation.
It will be helpful to not have Meridian High School at capacity during the expansion because they will have to close down classrooms and parts of the building for renovation, Exline said.
The work at Meridian High School, built in 1975, is expected to begin this summer; school officials are still finalizing the scope of the renovation and construction timeline.
