Kick and glide to Ketchum for the Nordic Festival

The Sun Valley Nordic Festival runs Saturday, Jan. 28, through Feb. 5, featuring a full menu of Nordic-related skiing and other activities.

The festival kicks off Saturday with the Ski the Rails event, a volks-ski, which encourages all people to come out and ski the Wood River Trail from Ketchum to Hailey.

Refreshments, snacks and fun for families are scheduled along the way.

Sun Valley has received big snowstorms, setting the region up for an ideal scenario leading into the Nordic Festival.

“This last round of storms, which came in wet and heavy and left with a cold and light note, has dialed us in,” said Eric Rector, Blaine County Recreation District’s field general.

“We are 100 percent open and fully operational on every last centimeter of our 250-kilometer trail system.”

Quigley Nordic and Lake Creek are now in ideal shape, the Wood River Trail is open from end to end in preparation for the Ski the Rails event, and event organizers are preparing the downtown site of the sprint races, Rector said.

“The classic conditions are perfect and we have full track width across the entire system,” he said.

The week will feature a variety of events, including the Boulder Mountain Tour ski race, sprint races, downtown Nordic Night, a 5-kilometer snowshoe race, and the Norwegian Olympic Team.
