Con artist targeting Idaho jobless claimants

A person identifying himself as associated with a bank has been calling Idahoans who receive unemployment benefits and asking for personal financial information, the Idaho Department of Labor said Tuesday.

The department said it has received a number of reports about the calls and urges claimants to hang up if they receive one.

Incidents reported to the department Monday involved calls from a restricted number, not identified on Caller ID systems. The caller identified himself as being with a major bank, the department said.

Claimants who believe there is reason to worry about their unemployment benefit payment and their bank accounts should call their bank directly if they have direct deposit, or if they have a debit card they should call U.S. Bank ReliaCard customer service at (866) 276-5114.

Debit card claimants should specify that the call involves possible phishing for financial information, as they may avoid a $3 charge for making more than three customer service calls per month, the department said.

The department said it is not aware of any problems with banks or benefits.
