Micron to acquire company that would strengthen data storage

Micron Technology Inc plans to acquire Virtensys Ltd., based on Oregon and Britain, that will allow it to share local storage across multiple servers, company officials say.

The deal will strengthen Micron's storage capability by combining Virtensys's technology with Micron's solid state drives, company officials say,

Vertensys uses a "virtualization" technology that separates a "function" — such as storage, memory or processing — from the underlying physical hardware — disks, dynamic random-access memory and central processing units. This separation allows the physical hardware to be pooled and shared across multiple applications, increasing utilization and capital efficiency.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of January. Details were not released.

The company's U.S. headquarters is in Beaverton, Ore.
