11-11-11 & No. 11: The facts behind Kellen Moore's Boise State jersey

There is never a bad time to talk about Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, but today — Nov. 11, 2011 or 11-11-11 — seems like the perfect time to share 11 items about Boise’s most popular No. 11.

1. Moore has worn No. 11 since his first year of football, in third grade.

2. He chose the number because of his favorite Prosser (Wash.) High player — wide receiver Dan Marchant, who was a senior in 1996. The Moore family has a 2-foot-by-3-foot photo of Moore and Marchant, with Moore in his youth uniform. “Danny was really nice to all the little kids who hung around practice,” said Tom Moore, Kellen’s dad and the former Prosser coach.

3. Boise State coach Chris Petersen wore No. 11 in high school and junior college. He switched to No. 9 at UC Davis. Neither number had a story behind it. “That’s what they gave me,” he said.

4. Petersen said he doesn’t want to see No. 11 retired, instead suggesting it be placed on a wall of honor. “We need all the numbers,” he said. “Retire it on the wall, then let somebody wear it. It’s hard to take numbers out when we have so many players. A lot of guys like 11.”

5. There’s a Facebook page dedicated to the idea of retiring Moore’s jersey. It has more than 200 likes. The address: http://www.facebook.com/retirekellenmoores11jersey.

6. A blue Moore jersey hangs in the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind. It’s in a display about the top awards candidates for 2011.

7. The No. 11 is the best-selling jersey of all time at The Blue & Orange Store, far surpassing Ian Johnson’s No. 41, owner Travis Hawkes said. “It’s not even close,” he said. “I couldn’t think of a more perfect storm: how good he’s done, four-year starter, perfect role model, all the jersey changes.”

8. It certainly helped sales that the No. 11 is available in blue, orange, white and grey. It was the only jersey number available in 2010’s Nike Pro Combat style.

9. Among the famous professional athletes to don No. 11: NFL: Phil Simms, Drew Bledsoe, Norm Van Brocklin, Larry Fitzgerald; NBA: Isiah Thomas, Walt Frazier, Gail Goodrich, Elvin Hayes, Bob McAdoo; NHL: Mark Messier; MLB: Barry Larkin, Jimmy Rollins.

10. Other No. 11s at Boise State: Jeff Elorriaga, men’s basketball; Cinnamon Lister, women’s basketball; Avery Salisbury, women’s soccer; Anna Muzzy, women’s volleyball.

11. Eleven isn’t one of the more popular lucky numbers, but it is a winner on the craps table (Yo!).
