Mountain Home and Bureau of Land Management fire crews were making good progress Wednesday afternoon on a 500 acre grass fire that threatened several homes between the city and the Air Force Base along Airbase Road, officials said. BLM officials estimated the Hog fire had burned about 500 acres by 2:30 p.m. SHAWN RAECKE — Idaho Statesman

Star, Eagle, Middleton, and Meridian fire crews spent several hours stamping out a large grass fire in the rolling terrain just west of Idaho 16.

The fire, located north of the intersection of Can/Ada Road and Deep Canyon Drive and just west of Firebird Raceway off Idaho 16 , burned at least 25 acres — and probably more — before crews knocked it down by 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire was called in around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

There are several homes in the area but none were ever seriously threatened by the blaze as it moved north before crews were able to knock it down.

At one point, several air tankers were called but those planes were called off a short time later when fire commanders determined ground crews made such progress the air support wasn't needed.

Star Fire investigators are still trying to determine what ignited the blaze. Crews will remain at the fire area Tuesday night to make sure there are no flare-ups.
