Idaho may be without two starting wide receivers Thursday when it opens at home against Bowling Green (7 p.m. MDT, Altitude).
Preston Davis is out with a foot injury he sustained Sunday and outside receiver Justin Veltung is recovering from turf toe, coach Robb Akey said Monday.
Akey said Davis injury isnt season-ending. Hopefully it will be sooner than later but it wont be soon, he said.
As for Veltung, who scored a team-high 10 touchdowns last season, Akey said, Im hopeful that well have him available for this ball game, but it is probably more hopeful than it is realistic, honestly.
Akey was perturbed that the Davis injury was leaked on an Internet message board. The fifth-year coach, who normally is up front about injuries, said he didnt want to tip off Bowling Green about it.
I didnt think we needed to let everyone know, but people who come to our practice evidently want to let everyone know about those things, he said. Our practices will be closed to the public until further notice. I cant believe we would do this to ourselves.
If Veltung cant play, that means more time for junior college transfer Mike Scott and senior Armauni Johnson, who caught 21 passes and had three touchdowns last season.
Davis injury could mean more action for senior Landon Weaver, who caught one pass in four games last season. Running back Kama Bailey also can play that slot receiver position if necessary.
Weve got guys who have shown they can catch the football and can do things with it once we get it to them, Akey said. Bowling Green might see a whole lot more personnel groupings than theyre accustomed to seeing.
The only other injury Akey addressed was offensive lineman Kyle Salm, who was meeting with doctors to determine if his shoulder needed surgery.
