Roundup of family-friendly things to do in the Treasure Valley this weekend

Every Friday through the summer, I am posting a roundup of weekend events happening in the Treasure Valley that are perfect for families. If there's an event I haven't listed, please feel free to post in the comments section below.

BOISE

Deli Days - Friday

Get your kosher deli fix at the annual Deli Days festival. Each year the folks at the Ahavath Beth Israel Synagogue serve up authentic Jewish favorites such as kosher deli sandwiches, knishes, Israeli salad, New York-style bagels, dill pickles and, of course, loads of homemade Jewish pastries. There also will be music from Dan Costello, Fleet Street Klezmer Band, the Moody Jews and others, and you can see a mock Jewish wedding at 3 p.m. June 24.

Boise Rec Fest at Ann Morrison Park - Saturday and Sunday

Celebrate your recreational self at the Boise Rec Fest, two days of music, community and loving what you do outdoors. At the REI workshop tent, you can learn about wilderness medicine and hiking in McCall, Stanley and Sun Valley. There will be exhibition games, an all-ages climbing wall, “Leave No Trace” training, food and entertainment. The main stage lineup includes performances by Matt Hopper and the Roman Candles on June 25 and Finn Riggins on June 26. Check out the youth stage with rockers Workin’ on Fire, the dazzling Freedom Footbaggers and Dragon Bushido.

Shrine Circus 2011 - Saturday and Sunday

The Shrine Circus 2011 will fill Qwest Arena, 233 S. Capitol Blvd., with spellbinding and death-defying trapeze acts, and tigers, bears and elephants, oh my! There also will be an-old-fashioned circus parade through Downtown Boise at 10 a.m. June 25. Shows are 7:30 p.m. June 24, and 4 and 7 p.m. June 25 and 26. $12 general, $6 kids 3-11, free for 2 and younger at www.elkorah.org. MERIDIAN

CableONE Movie Night in Meridian -- Friday

Grab your family and bring your lawn chairs and blankets for movie night at Settlers Park in Meridian. Tonight (Friday, June 24), enjoy 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian' on the huge inflatable movie screen. All movies start at dusk.

NAMPA

Pet haven gala fundraiser in Nampa - Saturday

Families can enjoy an ice cream social and Beatles music by the Get Back Band. There will be a baked goods sale, silent auction and a hot cars display by Synister Cruize Club of Boise. Canyon County Commissioner Dave Ferdinand will emcee.

1 p.m. June 25, Nampa Christian School gym, 439 W. Orchard Ave. $5 donation at the door.

CALDWELL

Caldwell’s ‘Celebration of Flight’ - Saturday

The skies over Caldwell will be filled with everything from jet fighters to propeller-driven planes flown by elite military pilots and professional daredevils this weekend. At the “Celebration of Flight” air show, you’ll see the Air Force’s A-10 West Demonstration Team, Caldwell-based stunt pilot Greg Poe and his ethanol-powered Fagen MXS aerobatic plane, pictured right, and Jacquie Warda and her Pitts Special S-1T do their stuff. You’ll also find aircraft, classic car and motorcycle displays, radio-controlled aircraft demonstrations, flybys and more.

ONTARIO

Japan Nite Obon Festival in Ontario - Saturday

This traditional religious holiday and folk festival combines Buddhist beliefs and Japanese culture in a memorial celebration. Enjoy dinner downstairs or take-out is available and features bento boxes (filled with mafa chicken, teriyaki chicken, rice balls, inari sushi, egg rolls and sunomono), shish kebabs, panko shrimp and homemade pies and cakes. There will also be altar tours, samurai sword displays and obon dancing.

Rating: G — for gearhead

What it’s about: That race car and his four-wheeled pals get mixed up in international intrigue when he signs on to a grand prix circuit.

The kid attractor factor: They own the toys, they remember the first movie.

Good lessons/bad lessons: “Whoever finds a friend finds a treasure.”

Violence: Cars are crushed and blown up.

Language: Disney clean

Sex: Not a hint

Drugs: Not even fuel additives

Parents’ advisory: Noisier and faster-paced than the first film, this one is suitable for all ages, especially boys 5 to 8 years old.

GREEN LANTERN

Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action

What it’s about: A swinging single test pilot learns responsibility when he is chosen to join an elite corps that battles evil.

The kid attractor factor: A legendary comic book, a lot of green-tinted special effects and Ryan Reynolds

Good lessons/bad lessons: “Face up to your fears,” accept your responsibilities.

Violence: Lots and lots

Language: A generous scattering of profanity

Sex: No, but we do see the morning after.

Drugs: None

Parents’ advisory: Darker in tone than the summer’s other comic-book fare, this suits a 12-and-older comic-book audience best.
