Bowe Bergdahl is now a sergeant, but he likely has no idea. The Department of Defense on Thursday announced his promotion.
Bergdahl, 25, who grew up in Hailey, has been captive of the Taliban since June 2009.
Bergdahl is assigned to 1st Battalion 4th Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. Last year, he was promoted to specialist.
On Wednesday, U.S. Army adjutant general Brig. Gen. Richard Mustion arrived in Hailey. He presented Bergdahls parents with the promotion certificate and order, said Col. Tim Marsano, spokesman for the Idaho Military Division.
It meant a lot to the Bergdahls to have him there, Marsano said.
The Army considers Bergdahl on active duty status and the promotions reflect promotions he may have earned in that same time period, Marsano said.
Other than a recent video statement from Bergdahls father, Bob Bergdahl, and an occasional written statement, the family has remained mostly silent.
News of the captured soldier is also scarce, with the Taliban occasionally releasing video clips of a now bearded Bowe Bergdahl.
