If Boise State sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore lands an invitation to the Heisman Trophy presentation in New York, he needs to take a friend.

Junior wide receiver Austin Pettis.

Moore and Pettis hooked up for a school-record-tying four touchdowns Saturday afternoon at Bronco Stadium as No. 6 Boise State thumped the rival Idaho Vandals 63-25 in front of 33,986 fans.

Moore threw for 299 yards and five touchdowns in all - re-taking the national lead with 32 TD passes this season and padding his national lead in pass efficiency.

And since his friend and Heisman rival Case Keenum of Houston lost Saturday, Moore likely will become the darkhorse candidate of choice as Heisman straw polls come out this week.

"I don't care," the publicity-averse Moore said. "I've never been to New York É but we'll deal with that in a couple weeks, I guess."

That's among the lofty possibilities in front of the Broncos (10-0 overall, 5-0 WAC) in the season's final three games, beginning Friday at Utah State.

The Broncos still are chasing a Bowl Championship Series berth - a berth that became at least a little more likely Saturday with losses by USC and Miami.

And they'll play Nevada on Nov. 27 at Bronco Stadium in a game that almost certainly will decide the outright WAC championship.

Saturday's performance - a ferocious showing in which they capitalized on nearly every opportunity - made it easy to think big.

"It's a good feeling to come out and play that well," said Pettis, who set a school record with his 14th touchdown catch this season. "I know everyone in the locker room is really happy. We did it for all the Boise State Broncos. We had a few come talk to us last night."

The Broncos beat the Vandals for the 11th straight time, all by at least 14 points. But for the first time since 1999, they beat an Idaho team that will finish the season with a winning record.

The Vandals (7-4, 4-3) likely will play in a bowl game after winning just three games in coach Robb Akey's first two seasons combined.

"Nobody anywhere in the Vandal Nation is happy about what happened today," Akey said. "But I'm not going to let that destroy this season. That's what I just talked to those players about."

Boise State scored touchdowns on its first five possessions, including two short drives after Idaho quarterback Brian Reader fumbled and tossed an interception on the Vandals' first two possessions.

Idaho answered with the strong running of DeMaundray Woolridge, who rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns, but went into the locker room facing a 42-17 deficit. Boise State junior Titus Young returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown with 14 seconds left in the half.

"They got that storm going early and that storm is what's hard for everybody to survive," Akey said.

The Broncos poured it on in the third quarter (and first play of the fourth) with a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown by Kyle Wilson, a halfback pass for a touchdown from Matt Kaiserman to Kyle Efaw and a just-because-we-can touchdown pass from Moore to Pettis for a 63-17 lead.

Idaho actually outgained Boise State 514-458, but nearly 200 of the Vandals' yards came in the fourth quarter against the backups.

The Vandals committed seven turnovers, including five interceptions by Reader, who started in place of the injured Nathan Enderle.

"Nobody wanted to play this way," Idaho junior safety Shiloh Keo said. "We've got to go back to the drawing board."

The Broncos offensive coaches spent a little time at the drawing board themselves last week. After two straight weeks of abysmal first-half rushing and knowing the Vandals struggled to defend the pass, the Broncos broke out the no-huddle package that they've been perfecting since spring ball.

It's a pass-first attack - and Moore picked apart the Vandals. He was 14-of-16 for 182 yards and four touchdowns on the first five drives.

"It was very, very smooth," said Boise State coach Chris Petersen, who is 45-4 overall and 24-0 at home. "We were a little concerned because of the wind out there, but the receivers were making plays and Kellen was putting the ball on the money."

Moore has been hanging around the edge of the Heisman race for weeks. Saturday's performance, and an upcoming Sports Illustrated feature that will raise his profile, put him in position to make a serious run at New York.

Not that Moore seems interested.

"He won't talk about it," said junior linebacker Derrell Acrey, one of Moore's roommates. "I can only joke so much. He just kind of brushes it off."
