Sen. Mike Crapo visited Caldwell Monday morning to announce two developments long awaited by Canyon County residents and officials.
After three years of wrangling, officials have reached a deal with the Federal Emergency Management Agency that will remove key downtown Caldwell sites from FEMA’s new flood plain maps, Crapo spokesman Lindsay Nothern said. Dispute over FEMA mapping has held up the city’s plans for public and private development along Indian Creek that is the centerpiece to Caldwell’s downtown revitalization plans.
FEMA has yet to finalize the agreement, but the resolution seems solid, Nothern said. Crapo was joined for that announcement by Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas, who has made resolving the flood-plain issues and moving forward with revitalization a top priority.
Also Monday, Crapo joined with Senate Transportation Committee Chairman John McGee of Caldwell to announce at least $1.4 million in federal funding has been secured to begin work on adding a third lane to Interstate 84 between Nampa and Caldwell. Another $1 million has been approved in the Senate and awaits approval in the House, Nothern said.
Construction on the third lane would likely begin in 2011, he said. Adding a third lane to I-84 between Meridian and Nampa is already under way.
