Nampa's Market Limone, a multi-tiered culinary concept owned by Belle District developer Laurel MacKinnon, closed on April 28. The building at 112 13th Ave. South, has a foreclosure notice in the window and is scheduled to be auctioned off later this summer.
MacKinnon was unavailable for comment but did send an e-mail to the restaurant's supporters that thanked them for their patronage, saying, "It should be no surprise given the near constant news about the struggling economy, that these are indeed challenging times for small business owners."
MacKinnon opened Market Limone and Urban Shed, a furniture consignment store, in 2007. MacKinnon added a cosmopolitan-style restaurant to the market in July 2008. Known for its delicious and sophisticated urban cuisine, the place never built a large following.
MacKinnon owns several other buildings in Downtown Nampa and planned several ambitious developments, in what they dubbed the Belle District along 13th Ave. South, including an ice rink that never materialized.
MacKinnon grew up in Nampa and returned to her hometown in 2005 after a business career abroad to invest more than $5 million its Downtown. She hoped to make a difference, she told Statesman reporter Sandra Forester in October 2007, and wanted to create a sense of community through preserving Nampa's historic buildings. She wanted to “build a social fiber that strengthens community” through her developments.
MacKinnon will continue selling some of the specialty foods the market carried at the Urban Shed, 120 13th Ave. South.
