Henrys Lake. Fall comes early to the lake at 6,500-feet elevation. Cooler weather makes the fish active and hungry. It's a good time to catch big rainbow trout and mind-blowing brook trout.

Another option: Hells Canyon goes from scorching to just plain hot in September. The float permit season is over and smallmouth fishing is off the charts. You might also catch an early steelhead.
