Horsethief Reservoir

May 21, 2007

There is great trout fishing in the Horsethief Reservoir, and camping is free.

The reservoir was drained in 2006 to get rid of unwanted perch, and it was restocked with rainbow and brown trout last month, but a light snowpack didn't allow it refill. That shouldn't be a problem this year.

You can use your canoe, float tube or motor boat. There's also great bank fishing for the kids.

How to get there: Drive about 70 miles north of Boise on Idaho 55 to Cascade. Just north of town is the Warm Lake Highway. Take it for about six miles to the Horsethief Reservoir turnoff on the right. Go about three miles on the dirt road. It's a two-hour drive.

Activities: Fishing, boating, hiking, and there are several hot springs nearby.

Amenities: It's your basic campground, with outhouses, community well, and fire rings.

Nearest place to get supplies: Cascade is your best bet, but you can pick up a few supplies at Warm Lake.

Fees/reservations: None. No reservations.

Information: (208) 634-8137.
