The Snake River passes through the rugged canyon walls of Hell's Canyon National Recreation Area, carving a natural border between Idaho and Oregon before exiting the Gem State at Lewiston. The Snake River was picked as the seventh natural wonder of Idaho in its entirety. Hell's Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North AmericaÑdeeper than the Grand Canyon by about 2,000 feet.
