Kirkuk smiles back

March 1, 2006

— Bombings. Mortar attacks. Ethnic tensions.

These are often the headlines from Iraq.

But Idaho soldiers encounter another side, too. Kindness. Gratitude. Friendship.

Photo editor Kim Hughes has captured some of those moments in the past month traveling in Kirkuk with Alpha and Bravo companies of the 116th Brigade Combat Team.

These are a few of those images. See more in our 16 photo galleries.

I'd been trying to get this photo for a while, but the sheep are either too far away or going the wrong direction.

People in Kirkuk just walk their goats and sheep anywhere around here so they can eat trash and drink dirty water.

Very baaaaaddd.
