2010 Idaho Outdoors / Idaho Camera Photo Contest Images

<
• It takes artistic vision, perfect timing, technical skill — and sometimes a little luck — to take a photo that captures the essence of Idaho. The five winners and more than 50 honorable mentions that were selected from more than 500 entries this year managed to do just that. The photos range from dramatic scenic shots to up-close looks at wildlife like the one above. And you won’t find any of them anywhere but the Gem State. BY MONTE STILES
• GRAND PRIZE WINNER: CHARLES KNOWLES Charles Knowles of Meridian knows this spot on the Palouse well. He’s been photographing the old combine since he was in high school while living in Moscow and focusing on scenic photography with a large-format camera and black and white film. The 47-year-old photographer now shoots digital photos, but he returned to the Palouse and found it again. “It happened to be a perfect morning,” he said. “It was luck of the draw, being at the right place at the right time.” It’s Knowles’ first grand prize in the Idaho Outdoors/Idaho Camera photo contest, but he’s no rookie. Knowles studied previous winners to figure out what types of photos the judges like, and he let that guide his efforts. He also credits Idaho’s beautiful landscapes. “It’s definitely one of the better places for photographers,” he said. Knowles also had some guidance from a legendary master— Ansel Adams. As a teenager, Knowles and a friend wrote to Adams and asked if they could visit. Adams agreed, and in 1982 the pair spent an afternoon at Adams’ Carmel, Calif., home and studio. “He gave us a lot of information and advice,” Knowles said.
• YOUTH WINNER: RACHEL HOWARD The 15-year-old Eagle High sophomore put in a lot of time — and miles driving with her mom — to capture the perfect silhouette. Her effort paid off with her first grand prize in the Idaho Outdoors /Idaho Camera photo contest. Howard also has won multiple photography awards at the Idaho Fair.
• SECOND PLACE WINNER: CHRISTIAN NAFZGER Christian Nafzger won the grand prize in 2008 for a dramatic scenic shot of the Boise River. This time around, it was two little cowboys on a long hike back from a successful fishing trip near Cascade in the summer heat that captured the judges’ attention.
• THIRD PLACE WINNER: GLEN HUSH To get this shot of the Boise River, Glen Hush had to brave semi-trucks and cars whizzing by behind him on the Idaho 21 bridge. The Boisean won the grand prize in this contest in 2006 and has four honorable mentions this year.
• FIRST PLACE WINNER: MONTE STILES This veteran amateur photographer is known for going to great lengths to capture the perfect image. But he found this one close to the Boise Greenbelt outside his office. “You’ve got to enjoy nature where you find it,” said Stiles, who has multiple awards for his work, including a past grand prize in this contest.
