A national river protection group has named a conservative Idaho Republican senator as a 2009 "river champion."
American Rivers named Sen. Mike Crapo river champion for his role in the passage of legislation to designate 16 rivers within the Owyhee Canyonlands as National Wild and Scenic Rivers.
“Idaho has some of our most celebrated wild rivers‹the Salmon, Snake, and Selway just to name a few," said Rebbeca Wodder, the group's president. "Because of Senator Crapo’s leadership we can now add the special rivers and lands in the Owyhee Canyonlands, including the Owyhee and Bruneau Rivers to the list of Idaho’s natural wonders that will be protected forever.”
Wodder also applauded Crapo's role in passage of the larger Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 which included the Owyhees and designated 86 new Wild and Scenic Rivers, totaling over 1,100 miles in eight states including Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.
