Abortion opponents start to fight Nebraska doctor planning clinic in Kansas

A group of Wichita abortion opponents said Thursday that they want state regulators to re-examine a complaint against a doctor who said he plans to open a late-term abortion practice in Kansas.

LeRoy Carhart, a Nebraska abortion provider, said this week that his "main choice" would be to locate the clinic in Wichita. Carhart was one of four doctors who performed late-term abortions at George Tiller's Wichita clinic on East Kellogg, which closed after Tiller was shot to death May 31.

In response to Carhart's announcement, about 12 church pastors and other abortion opponents said they have asked the Kansas Board of Healing Arts to re-examine a 2007 complaint that Carhart and other abortion providers violated a state law that requires a concurring independent opinion from a second physician before a late-term abortion can be performed.

The 2007 complaint was filed by Kansans for Life, said David Gittrich, its state development director.
