CALDWELL - The Vallivue High football team won its first 5A playoff game in dominant fashion Friday.
The Falcons scored seven touchdowns in a 49-0 victory over Borah to advance to the state quarterfinals next week against unbeaten Eagle. Kickoff is 7 p.m. next Friday at Eagle's Thunder Stadium.
Borah's season is over.
"It was crazy for us," Vallivue junior quarterback J.J. Hyde said. "I haven't felt anything like this in a long time. I haven't been in a championship in football since middle school and now we're on the right path. I can speak for everybody that we all feel great, but it's not over yet."
It was the second meeting between the Lions and Falcons this season. On Sept. 19, Vallivue topped Borah 36-22.
This time, the difference was defense. Vallivue defense forced three fumbles and hauled in two interceptions in its first shutout of the season.
"When your defense plays as good as the defense played today, it just generates the offense," Vallivue coach Layne Coffin said. "It gives them a lot of excitement on the sidelines and it adds another level of intensity to the game."
Friday's game featured the top three running backs in the 5A SIC in Vallivue's Chase Christoffersen and Borah's Abraham Naway and Daniel McSurdy.
Christoffersen - the league's leading rusher - rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, all of which came in the first three quarters of play.
Hyde completed 8-of-19 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Five of those passes were to junior wide receiver Devan Telken, who finished with 111 yards and one TD.
With undefeated Eagle on the horizon, Coffin wants to keep his team on an even keel.
"I think it's really important when you get into the playoffs to try and do the things that you do well," Coffin said. "I think if you try and throw in a bunch of stuff, it just causes you trouble, so we are just going to focus on what we do best and try and refine it as best we can."
